Detail draughting and feasibility studies to give the various offshore support vessels such as the MV Far Stream an additional dive support ability.

Other similar studies were to  raise the equipment level and accommodation standards so that they can be used as standby/rescue vessels as per the UK 300 Class standards.

On another visit to BMT working for David Peers, I prepared fabrication & layout detail drawings of the Subsea gas riser& control distribution bases for the `Kerr McGee' Gryphon Field Development.

 Other Relevant Experience

Originally from a shipbuilding background, I have considerable and varied experience in Marine & Offshore Design and possess a disciplined approach including the motivation to work without supervision or as a member of a project team dedicated to the ultimate goal.

I served a Naval Architectural Design Drawing Office apprenticeship at Swan Hunter Shipbuilders on the Tyne during the days of the Super Tankers in the Sixties and early Seventies, which included over two years school and shop floor experience with external studies up to HNC level.

In 1974 I left the Tyne for Vosper Thornycroft in Southampton on the GRP Minesweepers followed by two years in Halifax Nova Scotia on structural detailing on Semi-Submersibles & a Drillship, before moving to Newfoundland for the construction of two similar Anchor Handling Tugs.

In 1978 I arrived at MIL's shipyard in Sorel, Quebec for a period of more than a year for the construction and final outfitting of a series of Container Vessels. After a period at Collingwood Shipyard, Ontario, Canada working on Great Lake Bulk Carriers, I was engaged by Bell Aerospace to loft existing GRP air intake cowlings from Military Hovercraft to assist in accurate close tolerance productions for future manufacture.

1981 saw a return to Marystown, Newfoundland, to prepare steelwork drawings on fishing trawlers, following an interesting fifteen months at Saint John Shipbuilders in New Brunswick. Where I worked on the design & fabrication of the stern structure, rudder, stock and shaft spectacle frame bossings including shell & framing expansions of a Ice Class Ro-Ro ferry intended for all year sailing's to Prince Edward Island.

After returning to the UK in 1982 I visited Sandefjord, Norway for structural detailing and preparation of hydrostatic documentation. Later the same year I was involved in a NATO project to convert a standard container vessel into a Combat Helicopter Support Vessel. Using the next hatch cover as a Heli-Pad an elevator with intermediate decks replaced the central containers. With entry through the elevator machinery house on the hatchcover over, the side containers were converted into repair workshops & stores for heli maintenance.

In 1983 I became associated with ITM Offshore modifying the crane hook & boom jib on the crane barge Mariner to Lloyds Approval followed by working within the Project Management Team on the Design, Construction & Installation of the ITM Flexiport at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands.

Norway a country enjoyed by all my family served as home for over a year in Alesund, where I worked on a variety of Factory Trawlers & Refrigerated Container vessels. Many years later in 1996 we all had a summer in Kristiansand at Westamarin while I worked on the conceptual feasibility study for the fabrication of the waterjet foundations and intake structure of the STENA HSS 900 high speed twin hull ferry project.

1985 & 86 was an enjoyable period in the early days of Northern Ocean Services on Teeside when I prepared a conceptual design package of a Multi-Purpose OSV for BP, followed by a more in depth study for BT Marine of the same with Dive Support and Pipe/Cable Laying capabilities. This design reached Bid Tender stage when reduced oil prices, put the project on hold.

At the end of 1987 I was engaged to support the installation of a Heli-Deck on the Northern Venturer, which included structural modifications and strengthening, piping and revised Fire & Safety Plan liasing with Lloyds Register for Approval with site supervision through to completion.

Matatec Hatchcovers engaged me during 1988 to manage the design, detail, fabrication and supervision of sub-contractors on a ferry modification project, to install a tween deck vehicle hatch/ramp. The ramp was capable of transferring articulated lorries and cars up to the exterior vehicle deck, which when raised with the last two lorries formed a flush watertight Upper deck.

At the Tees Offshore Base drydock in 1989, I managed a team of detailers for Cable & Wireless, while supervising sub-contractors and site construction during the modifications to an OSV, adding cable storage tank, gantry and transfer equipment to lay subsea telecom cables.

During 1989 working for a sub-contractor of McTay Marine, I drew the structural fabrication design to incorporate the Voith Schnieder propulsion thruster and fairing guard into the hull of a harbour tug, involving modifications to the shell and framing expansions.

Prior to the introduction of CAD to the smaller shipyards in 1990 I prepared bi-lingual class & fabrication drawings of a 9500 dwt L.P.G. carrier being built for Scottish owners with class approval by Germanischer Lloyds at Brand Werft in Oldenburg in Germany .

I visited BMT Offshore in Aberdeen during 1993 where I prepared detail drawings and feasibility studies on various vessels to give Dive Support and Standby/Rescue capabilities. I also visited Global Maritime in London on a FSU tanker conversion feasibility study for Marathon Oil.

In 1997 I spent eight months in Louisiana, at North American preparing structural detail drawings on a variety of OSV's and Anchor Handling vessels for use in the Gulf of Mexico with AutoCAD 14. Having moved from manual Pen & Ink draughting in 1993 when during a quiet work period, I bought my first computer with an AutoCAD license paying for one on one tuition at Loughborough University, I entered the world of Computer Aided Design.

Recently I gained FPSO experience at Nevesbu in Holland & Harland & Wolff in Belfast on Bluewaters Glas Dowr and BP's Schiehallion projects returning later to Nevesbu to prepare fabrication detailing for Damen Shipbuilders on a Navigational Aids Vessel
